Lib Dem Leader Paul Lorber takes up TfL cycling challenge in support of SIX Brent Libraries

Following his successful run in the Barham Park fun run last month – when he raised over £1,000 in sponsorship for Friends of Barham Library – Brent Liberal Democrat Leader Councillors Paul Lorber has announced his next physical fundraising challenge for the libraries campaign.

Paul is switching from two legs to two wheels in order to take part in the Transport for London Cycle Challenge alongside Ironman competitor and former Brent Tokyngton Councillor Peter Corcoran. He hopes other local cyclists will join him as part of the Brent SOS Libraries team.

The Brent SOS Libraries team will compete against other teams across London to log the most miles cycled between 18 June and 15 July.

Paul Lorber said:

“Challenging the council’s decision to shut half of Brent’s libraries is an expensive business – but the legal challenge is a vital part of the community campaign to get the council’s leadership to think again. Taking part in the cycle challenge is a fun way to raise funds, raise awareness of cycling and get fitter at the same time.”

Paul is urging local cyclists to join the Brent SOS Libraries team. He said:

“We ask participants to make a donation towards the legal action of £5 and hope to raise sponsorship as well. It doesn’t matter whether you cycle a couple of miles a day on your daily commute, or rack up dozens of miles of serious training at the weekend – everyone is welcome to take part.”

Potential participants should sign up to the Brent SOS Libraries Team at the TfL Cycle Challenge website and make their £5 donation using the details at Brent SOS Libraries where they can also get more information.

Paul hopes to use his time on the bike during June and July to prepare for a future fundraising event – the Tour of Brent.

“I’m making the most of being trained by Brent Ironman competitor Peter Corcoran. Unlike him I won’t be running a marathon after swimming a mile but I hope he’ll get me fitter than ever before as I prepare for my bike Tour of Brent.

“The most important thing however is to increase public awareness of the Brent community awareness of the continuing campaign to SAVE the popular local libraries in Barham park, Cricklewood, Kensal Rise, Neasden, Preston and Tokyngton.”

Libdem Leader running to Save Barham Library!

Liberal Democrat Leader, Councillor Paul Lorber, is once again dusting off his running shoes to raise money for Friends of Barham Library – the local community group campaigning to Save Barham Library from closure .

The run will take place at the end of May to celebrate the 59th Anniversary of the opening of Barham Library. Councillor Paul Lorber and the other supporters of Barham Library are determined to ensure that the Library survives to celebrate its Diamond Jubilee on 31 May 2012 and beyond.

Barham Library is one of the 6 libraries currently under threat of closure by Labour councillors at Brent Council.

Cllr Lorber is encouraging other local residents to also help raise money through sponsorship and to join him in the fun run and walk in Barham Park in May.

Barham Library is the only one of Brent’s Libraries situated in a park. The park was gifted to Wembley Council (predecessor of current Brent Council) by Titus Barham for the “benefit and enjoyment” of local people in 1933. The library itself was opened to the public on 31 May 1952 and is situated in the beautiful former Crabbs House, which was part of the Barham family residence.

“Barham Park is a very beautiful local park and the library and park complement each other in providing a great deal of pleasure to local people. Local people want their library retained and are getting together to help to save it. I am hoping that with the generosity of people willing to sponsor me we will go some way towards raising money to Save Barham Library!” says Councillor Paul Lorber.

Stop dithering and say no to Olympic tickets!

Brent’s Liberal Democrat Councillors today called on the Labour Administration in Brent to stop dithering and say no to the offer of using tax payer’s money to buy Olympic tickets for Councillors and Council staff.

The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG) put tickets for the events on sale to the general public on Tuesday (15th March), but not before reserving £50,000 worth of the tickets for the capital’s 33 local councils. This means that councils are able to buy tickets for events including the opening and closing ceremonies, costing £995 each.

Labour-run Brent Council has received the letter from LOCOG offering the tickets but “are still considering what to do”.

Early this week organisers of the games faced calls from the London Assembly to publish a record of all seats reserved for officials, politicians and VIPs, amid fears that thousands were being set aside and would not be available to the public.

So far more than 10 councils have rejected LOCOG’s offer to buy up to 100 special tickets. Liberal Democrats in Brent are saying it is a “no brainer” to turn them down, especially at a time when the Council is making cuts to services.

Liberal Democrat Councillor, Jack Beck, said:

“The fact is this is a no brainer. I can’t see what the Labour Administration has to think about. They should just do the right thing and say no thanks. Using public money to buy tickets for councillors is just ridiculous. The tax payers of Brent have already paid for the games through their taxes, it’s just mad to expect them to pay for councillors and town hall chiefs to attend the games too!  ”

Liberal Democrat Councillor cheers on charity “Ironman Challenge” contestant!

Not content with simply completing one “ironman” challenge, a Wembley resident and campaigner, Peter Corcoran, will be taking part in another of the World’s toughest sporting challenges to raise money for a local charity, St Luke’s, in October this year.

On 3rd October Peter will be undertaking the “Challenge Barcelona” competition, a distance triathlon event which will see Peter swimming 3,800 metres (152 lengths of Vale Farm), then cycling 180k (112 miles) followed by a run of a full 26 mile (42k) marathon.

The world distance Ironman is the ultimate multi-sport endurance event. Maintaining Ironman pace for up to seventeen hours will be a major task especially if the weather exceeds 25 degrees as in previous years.

The tight swim course will be a loop out to sea making it impossible to drink fluid and difficult to avoid jelly fish. Both the cycle and run courses are very challenging and will see many participants finishing well past midnight.

Athletes will need to have a robust nutrition strategy to combat a huge loss of fluid through perspiration – needing up to 28 litres over the 226k event.

Speaking about the event Peter said,

“I expect the 17 hour, 226k event to be the toughest challenge of my life to date. I watched it from the side line last year and the heat and piercing sun was unrelenting. I was gob-smacked that it could be so hot in Spain in October. My race strategy will see me go dangerously close to disqualification in the late afternoon and pick the tempo up on the run up to midnight – fingers crossed.”

Encouraging Peter on, Cllr Paul Lorber, Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group said,

“St Luke’s is a great local charity and it’s really great to see someone doing something so impressive to raise money for them. We really wish Peter all the best and encourage him to remember to drink plenty of water!”

Councillor abseil to for health charity

A Liberal Democrat councillor is to abseil to raise money for charity.

Councillor Chandubhai Patel, Liberal Democrat councillor for Sudbury, will be one of around 80 people to abseil down a 10-storey building on Friday 3rd September.

The event, which will see Cllr Patel abseil 130 feet, will take place from the 10th floor balcony of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother wing at St. Mary’s Hospital in Paddington, and is aimed at raising money for the Imperial College Healthcare Charity.  This is a broad-based charity which supports:

St. Mary’s Hospital in Paddington
Charing Cross Hospital
Hammersmith Hospital
The Queen Charlotte Hospital
The Western Eye Hospital

The new feat follows previous charity efforts by the Liberal Democrat councillor, a pensioner, including a 10km run, and undertaking a challenge walking on hot coals.

Liberal Democrat Councillor Chandu Patel says:

“I am always up for a new challenge, so when I was asked if I wanted to abseil 130 feet down the side of a 10-storey building , I thought to myself, why not?

“It’s all in a good cause, because as well as keeping myself fit and healthy it means I can do my bit to raise money to help towards the important work that these Hospitals do.

“In an age where people are living longer, and quality of life is important, I hope it will also send a message that it’s never too late to have a go at something different.  Not everyone will choose this kind of activity, but there are many opportunities to improve and maintain fitness, from brisk walks to dance classes, that people can take up if they choose.”

Anyone wishing to support Cllr Patel’s efforts to raise money can send a cheque payable to the Imperial College Healthcare Charity to: Cllr Chandu Patel, c/o Liberal Democrat Office, Brent Town Hall, Forty Lane, Wembley  HA9 9HD.

Lib Dem Leader to run for Barham School

Liberal Democrat Leader Councillor Paul Lorber is once again putting his running shoes on to help raise money for Barham Primary Nursery expansion project.

Councillor Lorber will take part in the 5km fun run at the Fryent Park Countryside Day on Sunday 19 September 2010.

The money raised would be used to help pay the cost of expanding the school’s Nursery so that it can extend its service to more young children.

Barham School which has 90 pupils in each year group wants to expand its part time nursery from existing 60 places to a matched 90 places.

The school is currently undertaking a feasibility study into the best option for a new Nursery building.  The pupils at the school will also be encouraged to participate in the design and funding of the project as a part of their education experience.

A feasibility study into a new enlarged nursery at the school is currently in progress. The school hopes to pay for most of the project from its own resources, built up over a number of years but more fundraising is still required and Cllr Paul Lorber’s run on 19th September is the start of the fundraising effort.  Anyone willing to sponsor Paul can send a cheque payable to Barham Primary School to Cllr Paul Lorber, Liberal Democrat Office, Brent Town Hall, Forty Lane, Wembley HA0 9HD.

Commenting about his run Councillor Paul Lorber said,

“The expanded Nursery will be of great benefit to the local community and as a School Governor and local Councillor I wanted to help raise money for this worthwhile project”.
